The Most Kissable Lips for Valentines!

One of the most popular treatments we offer, at Dr Anita Dhunna’s clinics in Essex, London and Hertfordshire, is dermal fillers for the lips. We all want beautifully-shaped, plump and kissable lips, but as we age the lips can become thinner, lines can appear around the lips and the skin can become dryer and more dehydrated. Dermal fillers are a non-invasive, quick, safe and simple procedure (when administered by a medical professional), which can give you a subtle enhancement to more of a dramatic change; the options really are endless!

Why are dermal fillers for the lips, such a popular treatment?

Dermal fillers are gel-like injectable substances, made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally-occurring sugar which can be found in the body, in areas such as the eyes, joints, connective tissue and within the skin’s tissues too. HA can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water, therefore it is a superb hydrator and helps to cushion and lubricate the body. As we age, HA is depleted and certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking and sun exposure can exacerbate this. The skin can suffer significantly, as a result of the loss of HA, so injecting certain areas with a HA dermal filler can replenish what has been lost over time, as well as help the body to create more skin-loving substances, such as collagen and elastin. Full and pouting lips are a sign of youth and vitality and injecting dermal fillers in to this area can not only re-shape the lips, but can plump and hydrate the skin, for a revitalised, youthful look. The versatility of this treatment means that we can inject dermal fillers in to various areas of the lips, from the vermillion boarder (lip line), to the body of the lips, as well as injecting more fluid dermal fillers in to smoker’s lines, to temporarily smooth and plump them.

Am I suitable for a dermal filler treatment for my lips, with Dr Anita Dhunna?

If you are someone who is experiencing natural ageing of the lips, or if you have always had thin lips and would like some enhancement, you will most likely be suitable for dermal fillers. However, before any non-surgical treatment can commence with Dr Anita Dhunna, you will be asked to attend one of the clinics in Essex, London’s Harley Street or Hertfordshire, for a no obligation consultation and facial analysis. This is a vital meeting between you and the doctor and will enable you to ask all the questions you need to, about your lip filler treatment, as well as allowing the doctor to conduct a facial examination and medical history check. The dermal fillers that Dr Anita Dhunna uses are all FDA-approved, CE-certified and of the highest quality, so are therefore unlikely to cause any negative side-effects. However, it is Dr Anita Dhunna’s duty of care as responsible medical professional to ensure that you have no contraindications, that may prevent or restrict you from having a dermal filler lip enhancement. Once all the necessary checks and assessments have been made and the doctor is satisfied that you will be a good candidate for the procedure, you can book your appointment for the treatment.

What happens during a dermal filler lip enhancement procedure?

Before the dermal filler lip treatment can commence, we may apply some topical anaesthetic to the injection sites, to make sure you are fully comfortable throughout the procedure. The numbing cream can take up to 30 minutes to take effect. Once your lips are fully numb, Dr Anita Dhunna will use either a needle or a cannula (a blunt ended needle, designed to minimise bruising) to inject your lips with a specific quantity of a specially chosen dermal filler. To achieve a soft, natural result, she may then massage or mould the lip area. After the treatment, you can then return to your daily activities, though there will be some aftercare advice that you will need to adhere to, such as:-

  • Trying not to rub or touch the treatment area for 24 hours post-treatment
  • Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption for 24 hours post-treatment
  • Avoiding excessive exercise for up to 48 hours
  • Avoiding hot steam, sauna or baths for up to 48 hours
  • Using ice or arnica to assist with any bruising and swelling, after your treatment for as long as necessary

Is there any downtime after a dermal filler lip treatment?

For a few days to a week after your dermal filler lip treatment, you might experience some swelling, bruising and tenderness in your lips. This is quite normal and can be eased by using an ice pack, cold compress and/or arnica before and after your procedure. Some patients can bruise more than others, so making sure that you time your lip filler treatment around a special event or holiday is advised. We generally recommend giving at least 2 weeks for any swelling or bruising to subside.

When will I see the results from my dermal filler lip treatment?

The majority of the results can be seen straight away, especially when re-shaping the lips or balancing out any asymmetry. However, you will need to take in to account any swelling and allow this to go down, before seeing the optimum results. Allow around 7 days to 2 weeks for the lips to settle, the product to soften and for the skin tissues to become more hydrated.

How long do the results from lip fillers last?

Every single patient is unique and responds differently to this treatment. If you take care of your skin and live a healthy lifestyle, you may be able to enjoy the results for as long as 12 months. It’s important however, to take in to account, that smoking, sun-bathing, strenuous exercise and even some device-led cosmetic treatments can reduce the longevity of your results.

I want much bigger lips. How do I achieve this?

If you are seeking a dramatic change, Dr Anita Dhunna will speak with you at length about this. It’s always possible to create a larger lip volume, but this may have to be done in stages, for aesthetic beauty as well as safety. Dr Anita Dhunna does however, believe that any lip treatment should complement the natural proportions of your face, so will discuss your reasons for wanting larger lips and if you have considered what a larger pout may do for the rest of your face. As a lip filler treatment to dramatically increase lip size is done in stages, you may feel that even after one treatment, the difference is astounding, as Dr Anita Dhunna will shape and contour your lips for the most stunning results. Sometimes less is more, and it’s all about the shape, softness ad kiss-ability of your lips, rather than having a huge pout!
