Skin boosters explained

As we get older, our skin can start to lose the vital substances that help to maintain its youthful glow and elasticity. Substances such as collagen and elastin are integral building blocks of healthy, resilient skin and when these are depleted, our skin can start to look tired, lined and dehydrated. This, coupled with the loss of the natural hyaluronic acid (HA) found within our skin (a compound which helps to hydrate, cushion and moisturise), the skin loses its bounce, plumpness and youthful vitality. At the Dr Anita Dhunna group of clinics in London’s Harley Street, Essex and Hertfordshire, we understand that our patients seek to look and feel as good as they can, for as long as they can and when traditional injectable treatments such as Botox® or dermal fillers aren’t quite what is needed, we can turn to injectable skin boosters to revitalise, rejuvenate and restore your complexion.

What are skin boosters?

Skin boosters are highly innovative, injectable substances which are designed to improve the quality of your skin, by working with the skin cells and helping them to repair, naturally. Skin boosters are not like traditional dermal fillers in that they do not physically augment the skin tissues or facial contours, but are more of a ‘liquid injectable skincare’, working from the inside out to hydrate, restore and replenish, as well as creating a skin healing response, by encouraging the production of collagen, in the weeks following a treatment. Skin boosters tend to be injected in to multiple sites of the face, so that a holistic, comprehensive result is achieved. Your skin will start to benefit from the instant boost of HA, and then will work for itself, to repair and improve its resilience. Fine lines and wrinkles can be erased and in some cases, results can last up to 24 months.

What are the benefits of skin boosters

  • Unlike traditional dermal fillers, skin boosters do not physically augment the skin or the facial contours
  • Skin boosters work with the skin on a cellular level to replenish and repair itself, from the inside, out.
  • Skin boosters intensely hydrate the skin, replacing lost HA and encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, by stimulating a healing response.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles can be significantly reduced
  • Skin boosters are suitable for all ages and skin types
  • Results may be seen after 1 treatment.
  • Results can be enjoyed for up to 24 months, depending on the product used and number of treatments administered.

Am I suitable for skin boosters with Dr Anita Dhunna

Prior to any cosmetic treatment, here at the Dr Anita Dhunna clinics in London’s Harley Street, Essex and Hertfordshire, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation and skin analysis with the doctor, face to face, so that she can assess your unique requirements for skin rejuvenation and repair. She will also check your medical history to ensure that it is safe for you to have the treatment and will advise on the number of sessions you may require for optimum, natural looking results. Once both she and you are satisfied that skin boosters will be both beneficial and safe for you to undergo, you can go ahead and book your first treatment appointment.

What happens during a skin booster treatment?

When you arrive at one of the Dr Anita Dhunna clinics, you will be asked to complete some standard consent forms. After which, you will be made comfortable on the treatment couch. Your skin will be cleansed and a layer of anaesthetic numbing cream will be applied. This can take around 30 minutes to take effect, and in this time you can relax, have a cup of tea, check your emails or read a magazine. As soon as your skin is numb and comfortable, Dr Anita Dhunna will commence the treatment. A series of injections will be made into the skin around the areas of concern and this can take anything from 30 to 40 minutes. Once the treatment is completed, you can return to your daily activities, whilst adhering to any aftercare instructions that the doctor may offer you.

Does a skin booster treatment hurt?

Like any injectable treatment using a needle, there is always going to be some form of sensation or mild discomfort. The numbing cream used prior to the treatment will however, make a significant difference. If you are particularly worried or anxious about pain, we would recommend that you take some paracetamol around 40 minutes before your skin booster treatment. We may also be able to discuss an injectable anaesthetic to use prior to the treatment, but this is not usually necessary. After your skin booster treatment, as the numbing cream wears of, your face may feel tender and sore, but again, you can take some light pain relief and rest assured that this sensation will subside in a few hours.

What can I expect after my skin booster treatment?

You might experience some small raised lumps or bumps at the injection sites, following your skin booster treatment, however, these will disperse within 1 to 2 hours. Any slight bruising, redness or tenderness at the injection points are quite normal and will resolve within a few days. Dr Anita Dhunna may recommend that you avoid alcohol consumption for 12 hours after your skin booster treatment and try to avoid highly strenuous exercise for around 48 hours also. Dr Anita Dhunna recommends avoiding sun exposure, UV light (sunbeds), freezing temperatures and heat, such as steam or saunas for at least 2 weeks after your skin booster treatment. Mineral makeup can be used immediately after your skin booster treatment if required.

When will I see the results from my skin booster treatment?

You should start to see some results in a few days, following your skin booster treatment. However, the HA within the skin booster product works in much the same way as your own body’s natural regeneration of the substance. Therefore, we recommend waiting around 2 to 3 weeks to see the full results of this treatment. A course of treatment might be recommended for optimum, longer lasting results and this will be discussed in your pre-treatment consultation with Dr Anita Dhunna.

How long do the results from a skin booster treatment last?

Each and every one of our patients is unique in how they respond to an injectable skin booster treatment. However, if you take care of your skin, avoid UV rays, don’t smoke and enjoys a healthy diet and lifestyle, you could experience results for up to 24 months (depending on the product used). If you are someone who has extreme skin laxity or ageing, we may recommend combining skin boosters with other injectable treatments such as dermal fillers or Botox® for a holistic approach to facial beautification.
