What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances which contain hyaluronic acid (HA); a component which is found naturally in the body and is responsible for cushioning and hydrating the skin. As we start to age, HA can deplete rapidly, causing the skin to succumb to the various signs of ageing. In replacing HA via injectable dermal fillers, we can rejuvenate the skin, lift the features and even augment facial contours, with no need for scalpels or lengthy downtime.

The three stages of ageing and how dermal fillers can help

From the mid 20s to mid 30s, we start to see some signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles, loss of hydration and even some slight changes to facial features such as thinning of the lips. Dermal fillers, at this stage can help to replace lost collagen and hyaluronic acid, which begins to deplete as early as the age of 21! Most patients of this age group wish to ‘refresh’ their skin, smooth fine lines and plump the lips. Some patients might start thinking of correcting facial concerns such as a crooked nose or lack of definition of the cheek bones. Using the right type of dermal fillers can assist with these concerns, replacing lost moisture, improving the appearance of lines and wrinkles and correcting facial concerns which may not be caused by ageing, but of genetics or simply, how the face has been formed. During this stage, we can also use Botox® or Baby Botox® if required, as well as skin boosters, to prevent further wrinkles and create a more resilient, hydrated skin quality.

From the mid 30s to late 40s, we can start to see more obvious signs of ageing. Skin sagging can occur as well as bone mass and tissue loss from the temples, under the eyes and around the lower face. It is at this stage that we might start to need more significant treatment with dermal fillers, such as lifting the cheek area, defining the jawline or correcting a weak chin. Again, facial reconstruction such as a non-surgical nose job or even full face lifting may be requested at this life stage. All can be done with the clever administration of dermal fillers, without the need to go under the surgeon’s knife. Botox® and skin boosters can also be used at this life stage, for dynamic lines and wrinkles and improvement of overall skin quality.

From the age of 50 onwards, we may start to recognise that more extensive treatment might be required to give us the results that we are looking for. Under eye bags, facial sagging, skin dehydration, deeper lines and wrinkles, excessive volume loss and lip thinning can all be experienced. Heavier, more viscous dermal fillers might be required, as well as the use of treatments such as Botox® and skin boosters, to fully augment, lift and contour the face, for a more youthful appearance. The good news is that if issues have been addressed during the previous stages, we may have avoided the surgeon’s knife and will be able to continue the use of dermal fillers and other injectables for years to come.
