A holistic approach to anti-ageing

Staying youthful and healthy looking can take some work as we get older. Not only must we be careful about what we eat and drink, but we may have to alter or moderate our exercise, lifestyle habits and sleeping patterns. We may also feel the need to embark on some cosmetic treatments and these may be either surgical procedures or less invasive, yet still highly effective, non-surgical procedures. If we consider that how we look and feel in our 20s may not continue through to our 40s, 50s and 60s, it’s easy to see why so many of us turn to a cosmetic doctor for some help and advice.

From her clinic in South Woodford, Dr Anita Dhunna offers a range of non-surgical injectable treatments so that her patients stay youthful and vibrant. However, how she approaches these treatments is to offer a more holistic, all-round, tailored plan, as opposed to simply using one treatment to ‘fix’ a singular issue on the face in a ‘one-treatment-fits-all’ approach; one which is used by so many non-medical professionals who are now taking it upon themselves to offer injectable treatments alongside beauty therapies, for example. Sadly in many cases, when treating just one facial feature with an injectable product, it can actually have the reverse affect, making someone look older than their years, even slightly odd.

Cosmetic treatments such as Botox® injections (wrinkle-smoothing injections), dermal fillers, skin re-modellers such as Profhilo® and PDO threads all have their own unique benefits. Many people think that Botox® and fillers are one of the same treatment, but this could not be further from the truth. Botox® is a neurotoxin which helps to reduce the movement of certain facial muscles which cause dynamic lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which helps to physically plump, hydrate and smooth more static lines, deep crevices and hollows. Dermal fillers also work to re-sculpt and shape the facial contours and can even be used, very successfully, for procedures such as the ‘non-surgical nose job’, due to the viscosity of some dermal filler products available. Profhilo® is an injectable dermal re-modeller which helps the skin heal and repair itself on a cellular level. It does not act like a traditional dermal filler, but the hyaluronic acid contained in the product helps the skin to hydrate, plump and rejuvenate itself over time. PDO threads are injectable ‘sutures’ which create a scaffold beneath the skin tissues, supporting, lifting and inducing a healing response, so that the skin will produce its own collagen to become more resilient and youthful looking.

When we consider the differences in all of these treatments, we can see why it’s important to consider using them in a combined fashion, for holistic anti-ageing, as opposed to simply offering one treatment for one set of wrinkles for example. Of course, in some cases, where there are isolated concerns, using one treatment can work very well; especially for those patients who are younger and are just experiencing the very first signs of ageing (the odd line here, the odd wrinkle there). When age starts to take its toll however, a bespoke treatment plan may be best considered for lasting results and a more ‘overall’ youth-giving effect. It is when a highly-skilled and experienced medical practitioner such as Dr Anita Dhunna puts her education, artistic flair and expertise in to practice, by creating a combination treatment plan, that the magic of injectable anti-ageing treatments can really be seen.

In an initial pre-treatment consultation, Dr Anita Dhunna will assess your face as a whole, rather than focusing on one particular feature or flaw. This may seem odd to you, as you might look in the mirror and only see the one thing that you are not happy with. However, when considering a cosmetic treatment such as Botox®, fillers, Profhilo® or PDO threads, it’s vital to appreciate the face in its entirety, the anatomical balances, any asymmetry which is present, if there is skin laxity or sagging, lines and wrinkles, deep hollows and furrows and imbalances which you may not have even noticed, but when treated, could make all the difference in how you see yourself in the mirror. Dr Anita Dhunna will of course explain everything that she sees and does in this no obligation consultation, so that you can understand fully, her approach and thinking behind her diagnosis for a combination of treatments, if this is indeed how she feels it best to proceed. She will discuss your requirements for results, your expectations, what really annoys you or affects your confidence, your medical history and of course, your budget. These all have to be considered carefully, before prescribing a course of treatment.

Once the consultation is complete and the doctor has advised you which treatments she feels would offer you the results you’re seeking, you will be given some time to have a think about what she has recommended, and whether you would like to go ahead. In this time, it’s important to think about the timing of your procedures and whether you have any forthcoming events that you would like to look your very best for. Some injectable treatments do have some cosmetic downtime (bruising, swelling etc) so it’s best to let Dr Anita Dhunna know when any special events are happening, so she can book you in for your treatment, well ahead of time, to allow any bruising or swelling to subside and for your facial tissues to settle.

Some cosmetic treatments only need one session for optimum results, whereas others, such as Profhilo® need two to three sessions, four weeks apart. The number of sessions required will also be discussed and if you are having a combination of treatments, these may need some time in-between them, for any swelling to go down and for the area to soften or heal. This is why it’s so important to choose a highly-respected, medically-qualified practitioner for your cosmetic treatments, so you time them perfectly and get the very best results for your time, effort and money.

Dr Anita Dhunna will not only advise you on the treatments that she can offer you, for optimum anti-ageing, but how to take care of yourself, to safeguard as much as possible against future ageing. This might include your diet, exercise regimes, sun protection (both chemical and physical), certain hormonal changes (eg the menopause) and potential treatments that you might wish to investigate to combat the effects of these changes. How you feel about yourself and your emotional thoughts about ageing. Taking this approach means that you will be tackling the effects of anti-ageing from all angles – physically, mentally, internally and externally, for the best possible results and a healthy outlook.

Dr Anita Dhunna believes that to stay looking and feeling our very best, it’s important to consider every aspect of our daily lives and how we can change them to improve our appearance and general wellbeing. It can be as simple as drinking more water, or a more complex regime where a combination of cosmetic treatments are required for a significant change in our appearance.

Whatever you require in life to help you to look and feel better about your appearance, as time passes, Dr Anita Dhunna will be on hand to help and guide you, so you can be more confident and healthy looking both now and in years to come.
