Keeping our skin supreme in winter

prep your skin for winterWinter time can play havoc with our skin. The harsh elements, central heating, a lack of daily sunlight and our dose of vitamin D, as well as the body’s slower metabolic healing rate can make our skin feel dehydrated, dry, dull and lacklustre. From her clinics in London, Essex and Hertfordshire, Dr Anita Dhunna offers a range of treatments to keep skin glowing and healthy in the winter months but there are also things that you can do, to maintain good skin and a youthful glow.

Home care

Taking care of your skin at home can be fairly simple. Eat a healthy diet packed with vitamins and minerals to maintain good skin function as well as keeping your mind and body well. Drink lots of water (around 2 litres a day is recommended). This doesn’t have to be water alone, it can be decaf tea, coffee, herbal tea, fruit juice (low sugar) or as part of a daily smoothie. Water helps to flush toxins from the body and the skin and helps maintain hydration. Then there’s exercise. Exercising regularly and sensibly helps blood flow to the skin and maintains good circulation (as well as helping the mind and soul) and using good quality cosmeceutical products in a regular skincare regime (Dr Anita will advise on certain products she feels will suit your skin). All of this will go towards a more healthy complexion, a fitter body and a relaxed state of mind.

Initial consultation with Dr Anita Dhunna in London, Essex or Hertfordshire

Before deciding on any particular treatment with Dr Anita Dhunna, she will conduct an initial skin analysis, to really get to the heart of your skin issues. Whether you are experiencing the initial signs of ageing, your skin is suffering from skin dryness and you need a burst of hydration, or whether you have oily, congested or acne prone skin, Dr Anita Dhunna will discuss your skin concerns with you as well as assess your skin and check your medical history, to ensure that it will be safe for you to undergo her suggested treatments.

Treatments for winter skin, available from Dr Anita Dhunna

Profhilo® is an injectable skin remodelling treatment which helps the skin to repair itself. It combats fine lines, dryness, dehydration and crepiness due to the production of elastin and collagen within the skin structures. Profhilo® is not a dermal filler but consists of high-grade hyaluronic acid. When injected, it speaks with the skin on a cellular level, helping the skin to rejuvenate, hydrate and reform. A course of 2 to 3 sessions is usually required for the best results, which can last anything from 6 to 8 months.

Medical skin needling using Dermapen

Dermapen is a more sophisticated, updated, electronic version of the dermal roller. It helps to restore skin elasticity and circulation by multiple needles penetrating the skin at 8000rpm. This needling of the skin encourages a ‘micro trauma’ which encourages growth factors to be released, stimulating the production of collagen and aiding the development of new, revitalised and remodelled skin. Unlike a traditional, hand-held Dermaroller, it doesn’t hold the risk of tearing the skin and it can be used in very specific areas due to its small tip (penetrating from 0.2 – 2mm deep). Dermapen can be used to treat the whole face, the neck and even the décolletage. It is a great way to repair sun-damaged skin and to help the skin be more resilient and glowing in winter.

Treating lip lines with advanced Botox®

We all know that Botox® can work wonders for expression lines around the eyes, forehead and even neck lines, but did you know that small, file lines around the lips can also be treated with advanced Botox® techniques, used by Dr Anita Dhunna. Sun exposure, the natural ageing process and smoking can cause premature ageing of the skin around the lips and this can be exacerbated in winter. Placing intricately placed injections in to the muscles here can reduce lines and give a smoother effect to the skin.

Dermal fillers for facial revitalisation and skin hydration

Dermal fillers are some of the most versatile substances for anti-ageing and skin restoration, as they come in so many different viscosities. From shaping, sculpting and lifting sagging areas to filling out hollows and deep lines, as well as promoting deep hydration of the skin and collagen and elastin production, dermal fillers can give the skin a youthful glow and the facial features a more youthful and sculpted appearance. There are many ways that Dr Anita Dhunna can bring youth back to your appearance using dermal fillers, from shaping the lips, filling out hollow temples, lifting the cheeks, sculpting the nose, jawline and chin to a full face rejuvenation lift. The results can be astounding and last for up to 24 months.

Skin peels – winter is the perfect time to undergo a course of dermal peels as during the summer we really need to be careful not to expose our skin to sunlight after a peel. Skin peels are skin resurfacing treatments that can reveal a more youthful, clear and glowing complexion. Using specific natural acids which are applied to the skin, dead skin cells, dirt, fake tan and pigmentation are all removed and this encourages new cell turnover and collagen production within the skin. In the colder months, it’s far easier to undergo a course of peels without risking exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays and doing further damage. Skin peels can treat lines and wrinkles, pigmentation caused by sun-damage, acne and acne scarring as well as ongoing skin conditions such as rosacea.

If you want to take good care of your skin this winter and look and feel your very best, there are many actions you can take, whether at home or with the help and expertise of Dr Anita Dhunna. Our skin should glow at all times of the year and there is now never a reason not to look amazing, even if the winds are howling and the sun seems an age away.
