Cheek enhancement with dermal fillers
As we age, our faces can change in many ways due to the loss of bone mass, muscle tone, fat and vital substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin.
In the mid-facial area, this can cause sagging, loss of volume and a general appearance of ageing and tiredness. Loss of cheek and mid-face volume can also lead to a weakness of the jawline, creating a ‘square’ appearance to the face. Jowls can also appear as well as the development of nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the mouth).
Fortunately, we can offer you a very safe and effective non-surgical treatment – cheek enhancement using hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers. Injecting dermal filler into the cheek area can have a dramatic yet natural lifting effect for the entire lower face region. The treatment restores lost volume and produces a more youthful appearance.
Dr Anita Dhunna specialises in rejuvenating these areas of the face using only safe and FDA-approved products such as Juvederm.
Am I suitable for cheek enhancement?
Prior to a dermal filler treatment, you will need to attend a comprehensive face-to-face consultation with Dr Dhunna. She will firstly check that you are medically fit and well. Then she will examine your face and assess which treatment will be right for you.
She will then decide on a course of treatment relevant to your individual needs and concerns, and invite you to return to the clinic for the procedure.
What happens during the treatment?
Dr Dhunna will use either a cannula (a blunt-ended needle that glides under the skin) or a needle to deliver a specific dose of dermal filler to the treatment area.
The injections form a ‘scaffold’ that lifts the lower face tissues, plumps out hollow and uneven areas, and hydrates the skin.
Dr Dhunna will then massage the area to ensure that the product is placed correctly and distributed evenly.
After treatment, we will advise you on appropriate aftercare management for maintaining your smoother, more glowing complexion.
You can then return to your daily activities.
Does it hurt?
Most hyaluronic acid dermal fillers now contain an anaesthetic substance called lidocaine. This starts to work immediately upon injection, so you should not feel any discomfort.
With a cannula, it may feel a little strange but will not be not painful.
If you are particularly sensitive or nervous, we can apply a topical anaesthesia or some ice to help partially numb the area before treatment.
When will I see the results?
Results are immediate but will continue to improve as the product settles and your skin responds to the moisturising effects of the hyaluronic acid.
You will then notice a smoother, silkier appearance to your skin with less sagging of the lower face region.
Is there any downtime?
You may experience some slight swelling or bruising after your treatment. This may last a few days.
You can help to reduce the risk of bruising by taking arnica papules. Applying arnica gel to the affected area can also ease these symptoms.
To further reduce the risk of bruising, we recommend you:
- do not drink alcohol or take medication such as Ibuprofen 48 hours before treatment
- avoid hot saunas and showers for 48 hours after treatment.
How long do the results last?
The dermal fillers that Dr Dhunna uses can give results that last from 8 to 18 months.
However, results also depend on your individual response to the product, due to metabolism, free radicals and lifestyle choices. Smoking, excessive sun exposure, poor diet and heavy bouts of exercise can shorten the time that the dermal filler remains in your system.
Dr Dhunna’s expert advice on aftercare will make sure you understand fully how to treat your skin following the procedure.
